This photograph by Alexander Wilson shows the north side of Dundee's Overgate at the point where it merges into the city's High Street, looking to the east.

A. Lickley and Alexander Barrie, houseagents, were listed in the Dundee Directory as No. 13 Overgate, the Foreign & British Emporium, 'dealer in hardware, fancy goods', was at No. 11. The Dundee Royal Argyle Bazaar is not listed at all.

The general printers and manufacturing stationers are No. 49 High Street were John Durham & Son, with Young and Co.'s dressmaking rooms above not listed. The hatter, Alexander Tulloch, was at No. 50, with J. & J. Peat's wholesale clothiers at No. 58.


Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
