Nethergate, Dundee

Nethergate, Dundee - Ref: WC0414

The focal point of this photograph is the south side of Dundee's Nethergate, with Whitehall Street leading southwards to the left and Couttie's Wynd at the right.

The British Linen Company Bank is first listed at No. 38 Nethergate in the Dundee Directory for 1899-1900. Peter Kerr is listed as their agent until 1915-16. No. 38a is listed as the Y. W. C. A. restaurant and boarding house for this period.

It is not clear why the buildings are decorated with flags, etc., and no specific date for the photograph is given.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
