Nethergate, Dundee

Nethergate, Dundee - Ref: WC0453

This image is the unfortunate product of two separate exposures being developed on the same plate. The trees are from the paler impression of the two, and are those in the grounds of the city churches.

The bolder image is of the south side of Dundee's Nethergate, opposite the city churches. No. 76 is the goldsmith Peter W. Mackie. No. 84 is the baker's shop belonging to Peter Anderson. C. S. Scott, a tobacconist, had a shop at No. 88.

No. 92 belonged to John R. Mitchell, wine merchant, and Christie Brothers, the clothiers, had their business at No. 94 Nethergate. James and William Christie, who both lived at No. 48 Albert Street, are portrayed in Vol. 21 of The Piper O' Dundee.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
