Nethergate, Dundee - Ref: WC0462

This photograph shows part of the north side of Dundee's Nethergate, just to the west of the City Churches and the junction with Lindsay Street (off the righthand edge).

John Fraser is listed in the Dundee Directory as 'embroidery designer and tracer', based at Nos. 51 and 53 Nethergate, and living at No. 55. Miss Annie McNaughton needlework shop at No. 59 was a 'berlin [fine dyed wool] and fancy goods repository'.

No. 57 was George Young's confectionery and pastrybaking business, with other branches at No. 10 Wellgate and No. 9 Overgate. He lived at No. 31 Reform Street.


Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
