Nethergate, Dundee

Nethergate, Dundee - Ref: WC0464

This photograph of the south side of Nethergate, Dundee, was taken from the foot of Lindsay Street, with Whitehall Street in the distant east (and left). No. 76 Nethergate was David B. Murdoch, military and colonial outfitter.

At the right is James Young, confectioner, Nos. 84 and 86 Nethergate. Whose advertisement in the Dundee Directory lists the 'confectionery establishment with ladies' and gentlemens' luncheon and dining rooms', and the fact that he imported Norwegian ice.

No. 66 Nethergate was the India, China and Japan bazaar, where James Watson is listed in the Dundee Directory as 'East India agent, importer and dealer in teas and oriental fancy goods'.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
