Nethergate, Dundee - Ref: WC0479
Alexander Wilson took this photograph of the south side of Dundee's Nethergate from the south end of Tally Street, which ran to the east of the City Churches to the Overgate. Whitehall Street can be seen leading to the south beyond Thomas S. Blakeney.
This shop was opened in 1887, and sold to Draffen & Jarvie in 1889. It is listed in the Dundee Directory as Nos. 8 and 10 Nethergate and No. 1 Whitehall Street. An advertisement says the 'magnificent new warehouse' 'closed 7 o'clock every evening.'
James Rattray, the watchmaker and jewellery business founded in 1850, and worked by him George D. Rattray, was No. 32, with James Baroon, 'hosier, glover, smallware and fancy goods warehouseman' at No. 38. He lived at Braeknowe in West Newport.
Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
