Nethergate, Dundee

Nethergate, Dundee - Ref: WC0480

This photograph of Dundee's Nethergate closes in on a small section of the south side, perhaps taken from the foot of Tally Street, which ran northwards towards the Overgate. No. 66, the India, China & Japan bazaar, was owned by James Watson.

George Sime was the surgeon dentist at No. 68, while Alfred Souter ran a jewellery and watchmaking business at No. 70. Mrs E. Tyrie sold baby linen and underclothing in her shop at No. 72. She also kept a register of servants seeking employment.

Mrs Mary Souter specialised in 'wedding trousseaux' and juvenile outfitting. The Greenock Worsted Wool Company is often listed in editions of the Dundee Directory as Fleming, Reid & Co. Worsted was a special kind of finely spun wool.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
