Nethergate, Dundee

Nethergate, Dundee - Ref: WC0490

The south side of Dundee's Nethergate is shown in this Alexander Wilson photograph, taken from the foot of Lindsay Street, looking east. The girl stands in front of the railings which stood around the City Churches.

Miss Mary Souter, of the 'Maison Souter' at No. 78 Nethergate, described herself as a 'costumier and milliner'. Alfred Souter the jeweller and watchmaker is listed at No. 76, with Miss Amelia Watson, who kept a register of servants, at No. 72.

The Mandoline, banjo and guitar studio at No. 70 was listed as James B. Dunn, musicseller. George Sime's Teeth Institute was No. 64, Charles Kerr, the chemist, No. 56. Beyond the hotel, at the top of Union Street, was Albion House, a department store.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
