Murraygate, Dundee

Murraygate, Dundee - Ref: WC0404

The west end of Dundee's Murraygate underwent some considerable redevelopment in 1896, when the City Architect William Alexander (1841-1904 - a portrait accompanied his obituary in the Dundee Year Book for 1904) rebuilt Nos. 7-11.

Having studied at Dundee High School, Alexander he worked for the local architects J & W McLaren before going to complete his studies in Edinburgh. He was appointed Dundee's Town Architect in 1871. He built Her Majesty's Theatre, Dundee.

The Murraygate leads eastwards to the left of this image, with Commercial Street running southwards, Seagate leading off to the east where David Mackay's dispensing chemist's shop can be seen.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
