Murraygate, Dundee

Murraygate, Dundee - Ref: WC0406

This photograph shows the west end of Dundee's Murraygate, the junction with Commercial Street at the extreme right.

The buildings on the left hand side were demolished in 1896 to make way for an elegant new block designed by City Architect William Alexander, much in the style of the 1871 Improvement Act structures in Commercial Street.

Among the businesses displaced was that of Alexander Esplin, a house factor, whose office was in No. 59. 'He is much esteemed in business circles, where his unfailing courtesy has won for him many friends,' reports the Piper O' Dundee on 7th August 1896.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
