Hilltown, Dundee

Hilltown, Dundee - Ref: WC0327

This photograph shows the junction of Hilltown with Victoria Road, which leads northeastwards to the right.

The two identifiable businesses on Victoria Road are David Robertson, watchmaker and jeweller, and James Fleming, ironmonger. On the Hilltown are James S. Smith and James MacGuckin, wines & spirits merchants, and John Hunter, pastry baker.

The Free Trade Emporium must have belonged to the tailor Frank Glenday (who lived at No. 3). Stewart Duncan, a butcher, was next door to Alexander Craig, iron planer, then came Mrs Grant, dairykeeper, James Adam, grocer, then J & J Calvert (drapers).

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
