Hilltown, Dundee

Hilltown, Dundee - Ref: WC0328

Looking up the right hand side of this photograph, the eye is led northeastwards up Victoria Road; Hilltown runs steeply northwards to the left, and Wellgate runs downwards in the opposite direction.

The identifiable businesses match entries in the Dundee Directory for 1980-91: Robert Webster and Henry Gray, wines and spirits merchants, William Kinnaird, tailor, John Hunter, pastry baker, James Adams, grocer, and David Wallace, baker.

The residential block at No. 3 Hilltown was called Elsinore Place. The furniture warehouse at No. 19 belonged to John Innes. The building at No. 27 (the word Hilltown can be made out) must be James Anderson, chemist.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
