High Street, Dundee

High Street, Dundee (south side) - Ref: WC0296

This photograph shows the south side of Dundee High Street, decorated for some celebration. Unfortunately it is undated, so the precise occasion may never be known.

This section of the High Street always featured clothiers' and jewellers' shops, here William Hutchen and William Bell, and Mackay Bros. (Watch and clock makers).

William Doig (the chemist at No. 9) 'is one of the hardest working of our public men' says his biography, as printed in the Piper O' Dundee of 28th October 1891, with a portrait. He served as a Town Councillor and a Magistrate, and on various boards.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
