High Street, Dundee

High Street, Dundee - Ref: WC0307

The corner building at the focal point of this image is Strathtay House, which stood at the southern end of Dundee's Reform Street and at the eastern edge of the road which begins as High Street and becomes the Overgate.

The store, which featured the city's first elevator, was opened on 22nd April 1891, having undergone extensive renovation. Regular illustrated catalogues of stock were printed for public distribution.

The issue for April 1895 includes a flyer for Fownes' patent 'Grip' Driving gloves - 'the most practical glove yet invented for retaining a firm hold of the reins' - while the January sales issue of 1896 includes coats, gloves and hats.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
