Hero in Dundee Harbour

"Hero" in Dundee Harbour - Ref: WC0839

The "Hero" was an iron paddle steamer, built by T. Wingate and Co., Glasgow, in 1858 for W. Buchanan, also a Glasgow company. She had a gross tonnage of 157 and was 181 feet in length.

She was registered at Dundee in 1886 and removed from the register in 1889, when she was sold to further Glasgow owners. During her three years in Dundee, she was owned by the River Tay Steamboat Co., Ltd., whose managers were Simpson and Don and Co.

In the background of this photograph by Dundee amateur, Alexander Wilson, there is another steamship, which is in the West Graving Dock of Dundee Harbour.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
