Flying Eagle in docks, Dundee

"Flying Eagle" in Dundee Docks - Ref: WC0824

The "Flying Eagle" was a twin screw steel steam tug, built by W. B. Thompson and Co., Ltd., of Dundee in 1890 for the Clyde Shipping Company. This Alexander Wilson photograph shows her in the West Graving Dock around the time of her sea trials.

She had a gross tonnage of 347 and was 145 feet long. She had large bunker capacity for deep sea towage work. After several changes of name, the "Flying Eagle" became the "Express" and was based in Alexandria.

She was then owned by an Egyptian company and had been converted to carry cargo. She sprang a leak on 19th April 1946 and foundered in the Gulf of Suez - a long way from home!

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
