Discovery in Dundee Docks

"Discovery" in Dundee Docks - Ref:WC0805

The "Discovery" is, without doubt, the most famous ship to be associated with Dundee. She was launched on 21st March 1901, one of the last three-masted wooden ships in Britain and the first built for scientific research in almost 300 years.

The National Antarctic Expedition of 1901-04 was the ship's first project, when she was captained by Robert Falcon Scott. She spent two winters in the southern ice, and plans had been made to abandon her, but she was finally freed on 14th February 1904.

The Dundee whaler, Terra Nova, and the Morning (a support ship) had blasted through the ice pack. "Discovery" returned to Dundee in 1986 and is the focal point of one of the city's main tourist attractions, Discovery Point.

Please check the "Discovery" website for more information.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
