County of Roxburgh in Dundee Docks

"County of Roxburgh" in Dundee Docks - Ref: WC0797

The "County of Roxburgh" was involved in the transportation of jute from Calcutta and Chittagong to Dundee. 11 voyages are recorded in the Dundee Yearbooks from 1887 until 1898.

The four-masted full-rigged iron ship was built by Barclay, Curle and Co., of Glasgow in 1886 for R. and J. Craig of 163 West George Street, Glasgow. With a gross tonnage of 2209, she measured 285.6 feet in length.

She is seen in this photograph by Alexander Wilson on the north side of Victoria Dock, in Dundee Harbour and would appear to have been freshly painted, which may or may not have been when she underwent repairs and survey works in 1888.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
