County of Haddington in Dundee Docks

"County of Haddington" in Dundee Docks - Ref: WC0792

The "County of Haddington" was built by Barclay, Curle and Co., of Glasgow for R. & J. Craig, also of Glasgow. She had a gross tonnage of 1943 and was 281 feet long. A four-masted iron full-rigged ship, she was launched in 1878.

This photograph by Alexander Wilson shows the vessel in pristine condition, so she had presumably been carefully worked over in the week since she had arrived from Calcutta, where she had collected jute for the Dundee mills and been at sea for 150 days.

Other visits to the port are chronicled in the Dundee Yearbook for 1886, 1887, 1888, 1890 and 1898, the last from Calcutta (in present day Bangladesh), while the others are from Calcutta. Her fastest transit was 109 days (1888).

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
