City Churches, Dundee - Ref: WC1408

This photograph by Alexander Wilson shows Dundee City Churches and the Old Steeple, looking west from what was Tally Street and nowadays is part of the Overgate Shopping Centre.

In 1872 the tower was restored by Sir George Gilbert Scott at a cost of £8,780. This money was met by subscriptions from Dundee inhabitants and the Common Good Fund of Dundee.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
