Two undentified ships in Dundee Harbour

Two unidentified ships in Dundee Harbour - Ref: WC0941

There are clearly three ships in the harbour, all of them sailing ships, most likely involved in Dundee's jute importation business. On the left is a three masted ship, on the right a four masted ship. The third is rigged as a barque.

The clock tower warehouse at the left is still a distinctive feature of the harbour area, which underwent considerable change at the end of 1999 and in the year 2000, today standing near a level crossing on the main Dundee-Aberdeen railway line.

Ships travelled from Bangladesh and India with raw jute to be treated in Dundee mills with whale oil prior to being processed into fabric for bags and carpet lining, etc. Alexander Wilson, who took the photograph, worked in a jute factory.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
