Morgan Academy, Dundee

Morgan Academy, Dundee - Ref: WC1477

Situated on a triangular site between Pitkerro Road and Forfar Road, Morgan Hospital was founded by John Morgan. His intention had been to create a hospital for the education of 180 sons of working class parents. Unfortunately, a dispute over his will meant there was only enough money left for 60 boys.

The School Board acquired the building in 1889 and renamed it Morgan Academy. More recently a catastrophic fire on the 21st March, 2001 devastated the building. It is hoped the frontage can be rebuilt with a modern school built behind it. (2001)

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
