This photograph shows the south side of Dundee's Murraygate leading eastwards to the left.

From the right, Smith Brothers were at No. 7, Lipton's Market was No. 13, the 'Greatest boot sale on Earth' was taking place at S. Collier & Sons, No. 15. William P. Gracie, the hatter, extended to Nos. 17-19

The boot manufacturer, A Duncan & Co. had branches at No. 21 Murraygate, 119 Hawkhill, 106 Ann Street, 15 Strathmartine Road and 127 Perth Road, and works at 22 & 24 Bank Street. Alexander Duncan lived at No. 22 Windsor Street.


Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
