Murraygate, Dundee

Murraygate, Dundee - Ref: WC0401

The south side of Dundee's Murraygate is shown here, with the British Linen Co. Bank (to designs by David Cousin) at the eastern end (to the left) and Robert Wills, the bootmakers, at the right.

Robert S. Barrie, at No. 73, is listed in the Dundee Directory as 'mercantile stationer, printer, lithographer, bookbinder and publisher'. The Murraygate address is for the printing office, the editorial office being at No. 16 Panmure Street.

Robert Wills had other shops at 56 and 58 Princes Street, and 50 Wellgate in Dundee, and 24 Bank Street in Lochee. He lived at Norman Villa in Arbroath Road. The Old Bank Wine Store at No. 75 Murraygate was managed by George E. Telfer.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
