Howff Tombstone, No. 591 Smith, Dundee

Howff Tombstone, No. 591 Smith, Dundee - Ref: WC2086

Dundee's Howff was the public burial ground between 1564 and 1857. Originally the Grey Friars' garden, Mary Queen of Scots issued a charter when St Clements graveyard became overcrowded and insanitary. The area also hosted meetings by the city's Nine Trades.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
