Murraygate, Dundee

Murraygate, Dundee - Ref: WC1094

This photograph by Alexander Wilson shows the Murraygate in Dundee, looking eastwards towards the junction with the Cowgate and Wellgate. The church spire in the distance is St Andrews at the foot of King Street.

The hotel at No. 78 (here clearly Machlan Tower) is listed in the Dundee Directory as Tough's Temperance Hotel, with John G. Sibbald's offices in the same block above James Rutherford's wine shop at No. 12, and Alexander Potter's shoe shop (No. 76).

Stevenson Brothers (The Dundee Dyeworks) were No. 80, and Johnston & Adams, the drysalters were beyond Meadow Entry at No. 82. Beyond were George Glass, a tailor, at No. 84, and C. J. Fehrenbach, watchmaker, at No. 86.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
