This photograph, which shows the south side of Dundee's Nethergate was taken from the southern end of Lindsay Street, with the railings to the left surrounding the City Churches.

None of the businesses shown can be used to date the image with any accuracy. Details have been confirmed with the Dundee Directory for 1898-99.The cigar importer at No. 64a was then owned by Mrs James Kidd.

The India, China & Japan Bazaar is listed at No. 66 as James Watson, East India agent. Miss Tyrie, at No. 72, was a baby linen supplier. Miss Mary Souter, at No. 78, is listed as a milliner. Her windows also describe her as a costumier and a florist.


Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
