Nethergate, Dundee - Ref: WC0456

Dundee's Nethergate is seen here looking to the east, with the City Churches among the tress to the left and the towers at the head of Whitehall and Union Streets visible at the left hand side.

John D. Cameron is last listed as a dentist at No. 68 in the Dundee Directory for 1898-99. Other visible shops belonged to James Young, confectioner at No.84, The Greenock Wool and Hosiery store, No. 82, Mrs Mary Souter, milliner at Nos. 78 & 80.

Charles Kerr, the chemist at No. 56, had other shops at No. 197 Perth Road and No. 4 Polepark Road. His publication 'Family Medicine Chest Guide' (Lamb Box 81(2)) includes advertisements for Kerr's pearl dentifrice, fluid magnesia and indelible ink.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
