Tally Street, Dundee

Tally Street, Dundee - Ref: WC0624

This photograph shows Tally Street in Dundee, taken from the Overgate looking south, past the trees in the City Churches precinct towards the Nethergate.

The businesses do not match any Dundee Directory listing, since Coghill and Company clearly occupy two shops, but they are only ever listed in 1892-93 as smallware merchants at No. 8, with Thomas Justice, cabinetmaker between them and the hairdresser.

In 1893-94, the hairdresser was William Parker, who lived at No. 17 Crichton Street. In 1892-93, he is listed as a wine & spirits merchant at No. 9 Crichton Street. The wines & spirits merchant, belonging to Arthur Rea, is listed as Nos. 52-54 Overgate.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
