This photograph shows part of the south-eastern section of Dundee's St Andrews Street, which links Seagate in the south with Cowgate in the north.

The Dundee Calendering Co. was at No. 48. To calender was to apply a final coat to cloth. The site manager was James O. Adams, who lived at No. 34 Wellington Street. David McQueen, who made packing cases at No. 56, lived at No. No. 7 Cowgate.

No. 62 was The Boase Spinning Co., Ltd., with Rockwell Works at Coldside, Jamaica Works in Jamaica Street and Hawkslaw Works in Leven. Other offices were in London, Manchester and Liverpool. W. L. Boase, the general manager, lived at No. 1 Airlie Place.


Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923
