St Andrews Street, Dundee

St Andrews Street, Dundee - Ref: WC0557

This photograph shows Dundee's St Andrews Street, which links the Seagate in the south with Cowgate in the north, at St Andrews Place, which is also the junction with the south end of King Street, and site of one of the city's oldest churches.

'At Whitsunday [1904] the Town Council will start the widening of St Andrews Street' says the Dundee Yearbook of 1903. This photograph is taken after the demolition but before the completion of the re-building.

The 'Egg and butter store' belonging to Mrs Patterson (or Paterson) is at No. 21. Even after the re-building was complete, the development did not stop. The site at the north end was demolished again to make way for the new King's Theatre in 1909.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923
