City Churches, Dundee - Ref: WC1406

View of churches and steeple from Nethergate looking west. The photograph shows what would appear to be an extremely elaborate lamp standard in the middle of the road. This lamp standard is also carrying the lines for tram-cars.

A fire on Sunday 3rd January, 1841 totally destroyed the 3 churches and only the Steeple Church and Tower were saved. By February, 1844 the Parish Church had been rebuilt.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
