City Churches, Dundee - Ref: WC1798
The first church of St Mary's was built on the site in the 12th century, the tower dates from the 15th century. After a turbulent history, the most recent catastrophe being the devastating fire of 1841, the City Churches were rebuilt as they appear today.
Fortunately St Mary's Tower, or the Old Steeple as it is more popularly known, survived the fire, and is today the oldest surviving church tower in Scotland. The Old Steeple has recently been opened to the public and is proving to be an extremely popular attraction to locals and tourists alike.
Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
