Dundee West Railway Station (Old)

Dundee West Railway Station (Old) - Ref: WC1049

The history of Dundee's railway stations is rather long and confused. Because several companies owned the lines, each had its own station, main lines terminating at Dundee West, Dundee East and Tay Bridge.

This photograph by the Dundee amateur, Alexander Wilson, shows the second and third Dundee West buildings, the latter still clearly under construction (witness the clock tower). The building in front was erected in the 1860s.

The third (and last) Dundee West opened in 1889 to designs by Thomas Burr, the Caledonian Railway's chief engineer. It was built in the Scottish baronial style by Blyth and Cunningham.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
