High Street, Dundee

High Street, Dundee - Ref: WC0304

This photograph shows the southern section of Dundee High Street between the Royal British Hotel at the top of Castle Street and Tindal's Wynd, with Commercial Street / Seagate in the distance.

James Keiller & Son in Castle Street was established in 1797. There are price lists of their produce in Dundee Central Library's Lamb Collection Box 29, dating from 1885 and 1887 respectively.

These include (as well as the marmalade for which the company is still renowned throughout the world) boiled sweets and lemon flavoured calves foot jellies at 12/6 per dozen pints (=approx. 5p per pint) and 'bottled fruits', including damsons and rhubarb.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
