High Street, Dundee - Ref: WC0306

The north side of Dundee High Street directly opposite the Town House is the focus of this photograph, with New Inn Entry to the extreme left.

The photograph must have been taken sometime between 1895 and 1896, when Walter Wilson's Glasgow Coliseum Warehouse (a draper's store) occupied the building at No. 75 and George Morris the bookseller was at No. 72.

Morris had taken over the stationers previously owned by George Montgomery. The Dundee Yearbook for 1896 carries an obituary for the latter, who 'made a speciality of the classics' and was grandson of the Jessie Lewars, who nursed the dying Burns.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
