Lass o' Gowrie in Dundee Harbour

"Lass o' Gowrie" in Dundee Harbour - Ref: WC0848

This photograph by Alexander Wilson shows the "Lass o' Gowrie", an iron paddle steamer, in King William IV Dock at Dundee Harbour. She was built in 1883 by the South Shields company, J T Eltringham for David Edwards.

With a gross tonnage of 128 and measuring 106 in length, she was primarily a leisure steamer on the Dundee - Newburgh - Perth route, with occasional additional stops and detours via Broughty Ferry.

Dundee Central Library's Lamb Collection 245(5) includes tickets and a brochure for sailings in 1884. The Piper O' Dundee lists all of the sailings for the summer of 1888, but gives no details of cost.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
