Loudon Hill in Dundee Harbour

"Loudon Hill" in Dundee Harbour - Ref: WC0855

An iron four masted barque, the "Loudon Hill" was built by Russell and Co., of Port Glasgow, in 1887 for J R Dickson and Co., of Glasgow. She had a gross tonnage of 2139 and was 283.4 feet in length.

Four visits by the "Loudon Hill" are recorded in the Dundee Yearbook. She arrived from with jute from Chittagong on 20th April 1888, 12th March 1889, 12th April 1891 and 18th April 1894. Her quickest passage was 115 days, her longest lasted 129 days.

Dundee was an ideal centre for the jute industry, because another of the city's major industries (whaling) provided another of the essential components in its treatment - oil. The combined income from both made Dundee a very wealthy city.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
