"Renown" in Dundee Harbour - Ref: WC0896
The "Renown" was a wooden paddle steamer, built at North Shields in 1881 for Warren and Co., of that town. With a gross tonnage of 94, she was 94 feet in length, and is berthed on the west arm of Dundee's tidal dock.
The Piper O' Dundee of 24th July 1895 includes advertisements for sailings of the "Renown" during the Dundee Holidays. These included day trips to May Island and Anstruther (i.e. around the Fife coast), Arbroath, and St Andrews. The Fife trip cost 2s (10p).
The remaining voyages cost 1s (5p). Temperance refreshments were available on board, and 'unless full complement of passengers is shipped at Dundee', the ship would also call at Brought Ferry every day.
Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
