Menzieshill Community Hub helps expand Sporting Memories in Dundee

After the successful launch of Forthill Sporting Memories Club at Broughty Ferry earlier this year, the Sporting Memories charity working with Leisure and Culture Dundee are launching a new club at Menzieshill Community Hub on 19th March. The club will support older sports fans in and around the west end of Dundee and surrounding area. Sporting Memories is a charity which operates free community-based clubs across the UK. These clubs welcome older people who like to make friends and connections in their local area or have a passion for sport. Menzieshill Sporting Memories Club will meet every Tuesday at 10.30am at the Community Hub for 90 minutes.

The club uses the power of remembering and talking about sport alongside physical activity to support older people aged 50+ to live better lives, including those living with dementia, depression, or living in isolation and lonely circumstances.

It’s a great opportunity for local people from all backgrounds to not only share their stories but to also partake in a weekly session that ignites old memories through photographs and quizzes as well as getting active again with a range of fun games and inclusive exercises. And if that isn’t enough, there’s also the opportunity to have a cup of tea or coffee (normally with some biscuits included as well) at half-time.

We believe the sessions are ideal for members who have an extra bit of time to go along to and they welcome all to their sessions! The club is looking for both members to come along and enjoy the weekly sessions as well as local people who have the time and interest to volunteer to help run or support the clubs.

Elaine Ross Physical Activity Development Officer (Older Adults) at Leisure and Culture Dundee said,

“I am delighted that we will be adding a Sporting Memories group for older people in our community to the activities we offer. We believe that sport has the power to bring people together, to create positive memories, and deliver an increased sense of purpose and belonging as well as being physically active.”

Donna Mackey, Partnership Manager for Sporting Memories added, “With the success of the Forthill Club now in full flow, the time is right to increase our presence at Menzieshill and we are looking forward to working again with Leisure and Culture in Dundee to make the club a success.”

Without volunteers, Sporting Memories clubs across the UK wouldn’t be able to run and all volunteers are provided with training and support to help them deliver engaging sessions for members – even for those who aren’t interested in sport!

Menzieshill Sporting Memories meets every Tuesday with a weekly session running between 10.30am and 12.noon at 290 Dickson Avenue, Dundee, DD2 4TQ.
