School Library Service

Japanese Resource Pack

The School Library Service, situated in the Central Library, supports schools and teachers by providing loans of resources, advice, resource lists, fast access to public library lending and reference resources, browsing facilities, and much more. The service is funded by the Education Department and is for the use of all local authority educational establishments.

Loan Collections

These can include books, videos and DVDs from schools broadcasts and commercial sources, maps, charts, artefacts, models, audio, photopacks, puppets, games, jigsaws, CD-ROMs, science kits and packs, story sacks, ideas and support. Resources are selected to suit individual teachers' requirements and are not pre-packed. They cover all topics.

Loans are normally for a six or ten week period but extensions are usually possible. For nursery and infant classes we have a large collection of picture books, including picture giants, picture book and puppet packs, book and audio packs, and story sacks. We also have a collection of dual language books. Teachers can call in and select their own collections or we can select and deliver to the school.

Resource Exhibitions

From time to time, resource exhibitions and sales are organised through major suppliers, offering schools attractive discounts.

Resources for Children with Learning Disabilities

Some of our resources are of particular interest to Support for Learning staff and include fiction and non-fiction books, audio books, and graphic novels. A selection of titles from the Barrington Stoke range is available including some in audio format.

Advice

We offer professional advice on organising resources and practical help in the organising.

Access to Public Library Stock

While funded by the Education Department, we are part of the Public Library Service and so can offer schools fast access to stock and information held in the Central Library's Lending and Reference Departments.

Inter-Library Loan Service

Using the I.L.L. national network, books and articles not available from the School Library Service or the Dundee Public Library system can be obtained free of charge.

Support

Collections of resources can be made available to staff delivering in-service training courses and School Library Service staff will also provide in-service training when required.

Dundee Picture Book Awards

Involves 800 P1 and P6 pupils every year who vote for Dundee's favourite picture book. All authors and illustrators attend an Award ceremony where the winner is announced.

Children host the ceremony and cash prizes are awarded.
