Victoria Diamond Jubilee decorations, Dundee

Victoria Diamond Jubilee decorations, Dundee - Ref: WC1693

Photograph from Alexander Wilson Photographic Collection. View of the foot of the old Overgate

The photograph shows a horse and carriage with the driver in top hat and riding boots. There is a water fountain in the middle of the square. A Royal Salute of 21 guns will be fired in Barrack Square by Artillery Volunteers.

The Provost appears to have requested Dundee inhabitants to help with the illumination of the City for the Jubilee. A letter in the Dundee Courier (from Loyalty and Economy) suggests each household light a candle in each window as a cheap and effective help towards the illuminations.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
