Tay Rail Bridge, Dundee

Tay Bridge, Dundee - Ref: WC1647

The photograph shows a group of workmen sitting on a wagon and others standing on the line. No indication of where the photograph was taken but it would appear to be on the Fife side of the bridge.

The designer of the rail bridge was Sir Thomas Bouch who was born in Thursby, Cumberland in 1822. He gained experience as a civil engineer by working on construction of railways in the north of England.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
