Tally Street, Dundee

Tally Street, Dundee - Ref: WC0618

This photograph shows Dundee's Tally Street running from north to south and left to right, with the east end of the City Churches complex visible to the right.

The main point of interest are the closing down sale advertisements for Thomas Justice, the cabinetmaker - nowadays, the business would simply be referred to as a furniture dealer - in preparation for his removal to brand new premises in Whitehall Street.

The Metropole hairdressing rooms at No. 12 belonged to Jon Boyd, also had salons at Nos. 4 and 6 Tay Street, and is listed in the Dundee Directory as a perfumer (a fairly common combination of jobs at the time), and lived at Albert Cottage, Monifieth.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
