Royal visit decorations, Commercial Street, Dundee - Ref: WC1671

Photograph looking up Commercial Street from Seagate.

Most shopkeepers will be decorating their premises and will close for the duration of the visit. The photograph shows groups of people standing around and also a donkey cart. On one corner of Murraygate/Commercial Street there is G L Wilson (Drapers) and on opposite corner James Anderson & Co (Drapers)

There was a heated discussion at a Council Meeting on 15 August re members of a sub-committee consisting of outsiders who had awarded the contract for flags, bunting etc. Only council members should authorise money from Common Good/Council Funds.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
