Overgate, Dundee - Ref: WC0512

This photograph shows Dundee's Overgate shopping area, with Barrack Street leading to the north at the left hand side, and Tally Street leading southwards to the Nethergate at the right.

David Stewart was the family grocer at No. 59 Overgate, with the wine merchant William Reid next door at No. 57. William Crawford, the bootmaker, was at No. 53. William P. Saunders, the printer, was at No. 51, and lived at No. 155 Albert Street.

D. G. Farquharson, the house agent, and John McNair, house factor, had offices above Stewart's and Reid's accessible from No. 3 Barrack Street. No. 45 Overgate was Mary Stewart, fruiterer, and No. 41 was David McLeod's Standard boot and shoe shop.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
