Overgate, Dundee - Ref: WC0505

This Alexander Wilson photograph shows Dundee's Overgate shopping area running from west to east from the top of Tally Street in the foreground to the High Street in the distance.

William Reid was the family grocer and wine merchant at No. 57, with William Crawford, the bootmaker, at No. 53. He lived at No. 55. On the other side of the street, Stewart's boot and show warehouse was at No. 36 (at the top of Thorter Row).

No. 40 was John McKay, listed in the Dundee Directory as 'butcher and cattledealer'. He lived at No.62 Commercial Street. The group of people standing on the corner are outside the David Rodney's Albion Hotel, listed as No. 15 Tally Street.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
