Nethergate, Dundee - Ref: WC0472

With the trees of the City Churches to the left hand side, this photograph shows the view to the east along Dundee's Nethergate and High Street, with the Town House and St Paul's cathedral in the distance.

Russell's Royal Hotel stands at the top of Union Street, which led southwards to the railways stations. Only Tay Bridge survives. Charles Kerr, a chemist, had a shop below the hotel at No. 56, as well as No. 197 Perth Road and No. 4 Pole Park Road.

James Watson of the 'India, China & Japan bazaar' is listed in the Dundee Directory at No. 66 as 'agent, importer and dealer in teas and oriental fancy goods'. Next door was J. D. Cameron, the dentist. He lived at No. 62 Commercial Street.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
