This Alexander Wilson photograph shows the south side of Dundee's Nethergate looking to the west from the north end of Union Street. The church spire in the distance belongs to Meadowside St Paul's.

No. 1 Union Street was the fruit merchant and florist George Spence, No. 3 were painters and decorators, Kinnison & Dixon. Below the Royal Hotel at No. 52 Nethergate was George Petrie, antiquarian and general bookseller, who lived at No. 8a King Street.

Charles Kerr the chemist at No. 56 Nethergate also had shops at No. 197 Perth Road and No. 4 Polepark Road. John M. Connell & Son, bootmakers, were at No. 62. They are listed as 'also at Glasgow'. Mr Connell lived at 5 Tay Terrace, East Newport.


Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
