Nethergate, Dundee

Nethergate, Dundee - Ref: WC0488

This photograph by Alexander Wilson shows the south side of Dundee's Nethergate, looking to the east, with the trees on the left hand side being in the grounds of the City Churches.

The focal point is Russell's Royal Hotel, listed at No. 54 Nethergate and No. 15 Union Street, the road which leads southwards to the railway station beyond the building. Albion House, William Philip's department store stands on he opposite corner.

McGregor, advertising furs, millinery and corsets, is not listed in any edition of the Dundee Directory. Fleming, Reid and Co., summer hosiery, is familiar from other photographs of this section as the Greenock Worsted Wool Store.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
